From Texas to the Free State: Learning From the World’s Cheetah Experts

In 2023, I traveled to the Free State province of South Africa to do something that would forever change the direction of Oak Meadow Ranch , learn directly from some of the world’s leading cheetah conservation experts.

This journey was not about tourism. It was about responsibility.

Cheetahs are one of the most threatened big cats on the planet. Fewer than 7,000 remain in the wild, and their populations continue to decline due to habitat loss, human conflict, illegal trade, and genetic bottlenecks. I knew that if Oak Meadow Ranch was going to one day support cheetah conservation in a meaningful way, I needed to understand them, truly understand them, from the ground up.

So I went to the source.

Inside the Free State Cheetah Programs

The Free State is home to some of the most respected cheetah conservation facilities in the world. These programs focus on ethical captive management, genetic sustainability, rehabilitation, and long-term species survival…not entertainment.

Here, cheetahs are not “display animals.” They are ambassadors for a species on the brink.

During my time in the Free State, I trained alongside caretakers, veterinarians, researchers, and wildlife managers who dedicate their lives to these cats. I learned about:

• Genetic management and the importance of global breeding programs
• Daily husbandry, enrichment, and stress-reduction practices
• Diet formulation and feeding schedules for optimal health
• Habitat design for physical and psychological well-being
• Medical care, monitoring, and behavioral assessment
• Ethical standards for ambassador animals
• How conservation programs fund and protect wild cheetah populations

What struck me most was the level of respect shown to each animal. Every interaction was based on choice, trust, and long-term welfare.

This is what conservation should look like.

Why This Matters for Oak Meadow Ranch

Oak Meadow Ranch has always been about more than experiences ; it is about purpose. Every trip I take into the field reshapes how we operate at home.

What I learned in the Free State directly influences our upcoming cheetah habitat and ambassador program in Texas. From habitat layout to enrichment protocols to staff training, this experience laid the foundation for doing this the right way.

We are not building a cheetah attraction.

We are building a conservation platform.

One that supports ethical care, global research partnerships, and real protection for cheetahs in the wild.

A Personal Promise

Standing in the African sun, watching cheetahs move across open land, I felt the weight of responsibility that comes with working with wildlife. These animals do not exist for us.

We exist to protect them.

This trip strengthened my commitment to conservation and reaffirmed why Oak Meadow Ranch exists…to connect people to wildlife in a way that creates empathy, action, and lasting change.

The cheetah habitat at Oak Meadow Ranch is not the end of this journey.

It is the beginning of something much bigger.
